The Six Types of Working Genius: 6 Benefits for Schools

Since we are about creating healthy cultures in schools, and helping teachers and students find joy in their shared work, we love the Working Genius model! Since the assessment was released in 2021, and Patrick Lencioni’s book in 2022, millions of readers and tens of thousands of companies love it too. It’s a mini-lifechanger.


I had the privilege to work for Patrick Lencioni and The Table Group, as they were developing and launching the Six Types of Working Genius book and online assessment. Lencioni, author of previous other NYT best-selling books such as Silos, Politics and Turf Wars, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, and The Advantage, considers this his most impactful book, and response in educational institutions has been massive worldwide. We want to help bring this into your educational institution, because it is truly simple, easy, and transformative.


Many good personality and talent assessments already exist, such as StrengthsFinder and Myers-Briggs. They are proven to have their place. What makes the Working Genius so impactful for work is the simple hybrid of both together. It is also very simple. Simple does not mean simplistic, it often means straight from the core, to what is most effective.


The model, the book, and the assessment are simple genius. We educators and students do not show up to work in the same way. We bring to work a unique set of God-given innate dispositions and capacity for certain types of work. There are six. We each have two. We do not have them all, but thank God others do. Teamwork is like gears churning together. To pretend we can do them all equally is to cause burnout and frustration. To embrace our set of two geniuses and show up to work activating them is to love our work, and to succeed. That’s it, in essence. From there, we can unpack so much. We can apply it to meetings, to decisions, to hiring, and absolutely- we can apply it learning and student achievement, and teacher morale, and volunteer engagement.


The education world has historical tended to be rather siloed, and ripe for unhealthy politics and misunderstanding. Some of the biggest companies in the world, and universities, churches, schools, are discovering the model genius of this easy-to-use model. Here is what it is doing for them:

  1. Building teacher morale by highlighting, naming and calling out their unique gifts in how they work

  2. Reducing shame and "imposter syndrome" in colleagues

  3. Doing the same for students. While there is no assessment for children, it is generally simple enough to benefit sixth graders and up.

  4. Career discernment. Thousands reported back to us at the Table Group they if only they had taken the assessment in college or high school, they would have chosen a happier career path for their future.
